Taipei to offer cash awards for hit-and-run tipoffs

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taipei police will be offering cash awards of up to NT$10,000 (US$315) for tips that lead to catching hit-and-run drivers, effective Jan. 1, 2015, traffic police said Tuesday. The Traffic Division of the Taipei City Police Department said that awards of NT$3,000 will be given for evidence that helps catch drivers responsible for injuries, NT$6,000 for drivers responsible for serious injury and NT$10,000 for drivers responsible for deaths.
Witnesses to hit-and-run traffic accidents or anyone who can provide substantive evidence, such as in-car videos, can help by contacting police or calling the citizen's hotline at 1999. The new system is aimed at encouraging people to report such incidents in order to bring perpetrators to justice. Between January and November, the number of traffic accidents leading to injuries or deaths totaled 19,182, of which 263 involved hit-and-runs, according to the division.
