Sex trafficking ring member extradited back to Taiwan

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) A Taiwanese man who allegedly scouted women for a major sex trafficking ring in Taiwan was extradited back to the country from China on Monday. The 52-year-old man, surnamed Tu, was arrested in Shenzhen on Dec. 17 through intelligence shared by Taiwan and China, Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA) said Tuesday. He will be handed over to prosecutors and could be charged with crimes such as forgery and forcing victims into sexual transactions for profit, according to the NIA. The agency said the man, who is based in China, talked Chinese women into traveling to Taiwan to work as prostitutes. The ring he worked for was busted by the police in September and 24 suspects were arrested. Authorities discovered that the ring was recruiting Chinese women between the ages of 20 and 25 and trafficking them to Taiwan in the guise of medical and cosmetic tourism, business tourism or other short-term visits. Since the crackdown, Tu had been hiding in Shenzhen and scouting girls for other sex rings, said Hsieh Yu-fa, head of the agency's Taipei City Specialized Operation Brigade. Tu was able to earn NT$5,000 (US$157) for every girl that he sent to Taiwan or Macau for prostitution, Hsieh said. Initial investigation showed that the suspect had already trafficked over 100 Chinese women to Taiwan, he said. (By Christie Chen)
