President files criminal, civil suits against pundit

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday filed criminal and civil suits against a political pundit who has claimed he took political donations from a local conglomerate. Ma accused Clara Chou of aggravated libel, a criminal offense punishable by a jail term of up to two years. He also demanded compensation of NT$10 million (US$315,457), with published apologies on the front pages of the four major newspapers. Last week, Chou alleged that Ma took NT$200 million in political donations from the Ting Hsin International Group, which has been embroiled in a food safety scandal. She has continued to make false claims against Ma even though the president has repeatedly denied the allegations, according to Ma's lawyer. (By Lee Shu-hua and Y.F. Low)
