President to press for criminal charges against pundit

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday will file a complaint with prosecutors to have criminal charges brought against a political pundit who has claimed he took political donations from a local conglomerate. Ma, who said last week he would file a civil suit against the pundit, Clara Chou, accused Chou of continuing to make false claims and demanded that she apologize to him and the public, Presidential Office spokeswoman Ma Wei-kuo said Monday. On Dec. 23, Chou accused Ma of taking NT$200 million (US$6.26 million) in political donations from the Ting Hsin International Group, which has been embroiled in a food safety scandal.
The criminal complaint will be made to get to the bottom of the accusations made by Chou through the legal process, according to sources with the Presidential Office. It is also meant to defend Ma's integrity and show that he has nothing to fear in the face of Chou's allegations, sources told CNA. (By Claudia Liu, Hsu Chih-wei and Scully Hsiao)
