Smart mobile device penetration reaches 70% in Taiwan: survey

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) A total of 14.32 million people in Taiwan aged 12 or over own smartphones or tablet computers, representing a 70 percent penetration rate in that age group, according to data released by the state-funded Institute for Information Industry on Monday. With the penetration rate so high, the Taipei-based organization devoted to information and communication technology development forecast that Taiwan's market for smart devices will become saturated by 2016. The survey also found that the number of people owning smart devices increased by 1.01 million over the past six months. Of the 14.32 million people with smart devices, 5.32 million own both a smartphone and a tablet, according to the data. In terms of smartphone brands, the survey found that Samsung remained the favorite brand in Taiwan during the second half of the year even as its user share fell from the previous six months.
HTC and Apple also saw their shares fall, while Sony, Xiaomi and Asus each saw marginal user share gains of 1 to 2 percentage points in the second half of 2014, the survey found. (By Jalen Chung and Elizabeth Hsu)
