HONOLULU (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard is searching the northern Pacific Ocean for the master of a freight ship who was reported overboard about 60 miles east of Wake Island.
The Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Center was notified on Saturday that the 49-year-old Polish national was reported missing from the 622-foot (190-meter) freight ship called the Toscana. Wake Island is about 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) west of Hawaii.
The Coast Guard says the crew member was last seen about 8 p.m. Friday. It adds that 12 hours passed before the ship realized the crew member was missing.
The Coast Guard says the ship retraced its route to search for the missing crew member, but it has continued on to its next port of call in Yokohama, Japan.
