Mercury forecast to dip in the week ahead

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Taiwan could see cooler and more humid weather during the first half of this week due to stronger seasonal winds and increasing moisture, the Central Weather Bureau said Sunday. Daytime highs in northern and northeastern Taiwan on Sunday are expected to drop to about 26 degrees Celsius, six degrees lower from Saturday, forecasters said, adding that the temperatures could drop to as low as 20 degrees in these regions at night. Meanwhile, mountainous areas in northern Taiwan are likely to see heavy rains, while there is also a chance of showers in the eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung, the bureau said. Cooler weather in Taiwan is expected to continue until Wednesday, it added. Northern and eastern Taiwan could see low temperatures dip to about 17 degrees, with daytime highs ranging between 22 and 25 degrees. In central and southern Taiwan, daytime highs will remain around 30 degrees, but low temperatures will drop to as low as 18 degrees, the bureau predicted. This weather pattern could last into Wednesday, after which higher temperatures are expected, forecasters said. Meanwhile, the weather bureau warned of wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour in the coastal areas of Taiwan and in the country's outlying islands. (By Angela Tsai and Elaine Hou)
