The U.S.-led coalition kept up its airstrikes last week on the northern Syrian town of Kobani, trying to make sure it does not fall to militants from the Islamic State group. One elderly Syrian refugee from Kobani cried at the damage to his hometown.

As Ukraine geared up for a parliamentary election, vendors sold toilet paper printed with the image of Russian President Vladimir Putin. A soldier who lost an arm and a leg fighting pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine was among the millions who voted.

Tunisians also went to the polls, completing a transition to democracy that began when they overthrew their long-term dictator in 2011. Elsewhere in Africa, the relentless Ebola virus infected more victims.

On the sports front, American skier Ted Ligety raced in Austria, an Australian surfer tamed the waves in Portugal, the National Football League held a game in London's Wembley Stadium and the ever-prolific Cristiano Ronaldo scored against FC Barcelona. South Africa's Oscar Pistorius received a five-year prison sentence for killing his girlfriend.
