TSMC says no plans to follow UMC's lead on China investment

Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chip maker, said Thursday that it has no plan to follow its business competitor and neighbor United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) in setting up a 12-inch wafer plant in China. TSMC said it has already built a comprehensive industrial infrastructure in Taiwan and its operation efficiency has the competitive edge without needing to build a plant on the other side of the strait. "There is no need to establish a 12-inch wafer foundry in China, and there are no relevant plans to do so," the company said in a brief comment. UMC, located just one street over from TSMC in Hsinchu City, decided earlier in the day to invest in Xiamen in a joint venture with Chinese partners to produce 12-inch wafers.
