National security prerequisite in cross-strait shipping link proposal

National security prerequisite in cross-strait shipping link proposal

Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) A proposal by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) to establish marine links that passes waters near Taiwan's outlying Kinmen County will depend on a national security assessment, Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih said Thursday. The proposed opening of the Liuwudian Channel to connect deep-water Liuwudian Harbor in China's southeastern Xiamen City and Taiwan will need to be appraised by national defense officials, Yeh said in response to lawmakers' questions in the Legislature. Opposition Legislator Yeh Yi-jin said the MOTC's plan to open the narrow channel to Chinese shippers could threaten Taiwan's national security. But Yeh said the shipping route would not be opened at the expense of national safety. In addition, plans related to the proposed project will be subject to cross-Taiwan Strait negotiations, he said. The Liuwudian Channel currently connects Taiwan's offshore Lieyu Township, Dadan and Erdan Islands. (By Angela Tsai and Lee Hsin-Yin)
