Think tank optimistic on Taiwan's economic growth

Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) Even though the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has adjusted its forecast for global economic growth downwards to 3.3 percent this year, the outlook for Taiwan's economic growth remains optimistic, a researcher with a local think tank said Wednesday. Liu Meng-chun, head of the Economic Forecasting Center of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, said the IMF's downward adjustment of 0.1 percentage points is because growth in Europe and Japan have not met expectations and growth in China has also slowed down. Noting that the IMF has raised its forecast for Taiwan's gross domestic product growth by 0.4 percentage points to 3.5 percent, he said that if the trend of a strengthening U.S. dollar continues, increased momentum in domestic industry can be expected. Liu's analysis is that Taiwan's parts and components and semiconductor industries will maintain export momentum as economic growth stays comparatively stable. (By Chen Cheng-wei and Lilian Wu)
