Panama's first lady to attend ROC National Day celebrations

Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) The first lady of Panama will attend events in Taipei to celebrate the Republic of China's 103rd birthday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday, adding that bilateral ties with the Central American ally are close and stable. Lorena Isabel Castillo de Varela is leading a Panamanian delegation to Taiwan on behalf of her husband, President Juan Carlos Varela, and will attend the National Day celebration outside the Presidential Office on Oct. 10 and a party later that day, the ministry said in a statement. During a six-day visit that began Wednesday, Panama's first lady will meet with President Ma Ying-jeou and visit a care center for the elderly in Taipei accompanied by Taiwan's first lady, Chow Mei-ching, the ministry said. She will also visit the Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation in Taipei to learn more about local charity groups, the ministry said. Her visit follows a visit by President Ma to Panama to attend the inauguration of President Varela in July, the ministry said. There have been rumors recently that Panama may change its allegiance to Beijing as economic ties between the two countries heat up, but the Foreign Ministry rejected the speculation. "Bilateral diplomatic ties are solid," it said. Other foreign dignitaries set to attend ROC National Day events include Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes, Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore and Honduran Vice President Lorena Enriqueta Herrera Estevez. Also expected to attend are delegations of lawmakers from Japan, Scotland and the United States, according to the ministry. (By Elaine Hou)
