HTC quiet on speculation of tie-up with Chinese electronics giant

New York, Oct. 8 (CNA) Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp. was low-key Wednesday toward speculation of a possible partnership with Chinese electronics giant TCL Corp., which has suggested a cross-Taiwan Strait union to compete with U.S. giant Apple Inc. and South Korea's Samsung. Speculation about a tie-in between HTC and TCL emerged after TCL Chairman Li Dongsheng posted on his Weibo microblogging page Oct. 4 that "HTC is a company I admire very much." "I hope HTC can occupy a position on the mobile terminal market. Ethnic Chinese businesses on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should join hands to compete with Apple and Samsung," Li said. TCL, which acquired the French brand Alcatel's mobile phone department in 2004, is currently a major global supplier of low-cost smartphones. An investment in or acquisition of HTC would help TCL tap into the high-end market, observers said. (By Esme Chiang and Y.F. Low)
