Paraguay president, Honduras vice president visiting Taiwan

Taipei, Oct. 7 (CNA) Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes and Honduran Vice President Lorena Enriqueta Herrera Estevez are among foreign dignitaries who will attend the upcoming events to celebrate the Republic of China (Taiwan)'s 103rd birthday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday. Cartes, who arrived in Taiwan Tuesday on a four-day visit, is scheduled to attend the National Day celebration on Oct. 10 and offer birthday wishes to the country, the ministry said. This is Cartes' first state visit to Taiwan since he took office August 2013, the ministry added. President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday will confer the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon on Cartes in recognition of his efforts for promoting bilateral ties, and the two presidents will also sign a joint communique, the ministry said. Meanwhile, the vice president of Honduras, another of Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies, is scheduled to attend the National Day celebration at the plaza in front of the Presidential Office and the National Day party, the ministry said. During her six-day visit to Taiwan that will wrap up Oct. 11, Herrera will meet with President Ma, Vice President Wu Den-yih and Deputy Foreign Minister Simon Ko. The ministry said it believes Herrera's visit to Taiwan -- her first to the country -- will strengthen the existing friendly relationship between the two countries. Other dignitaries expected to attend the National Day celebrations include Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore and Victor La Corbiniere, St. Lucia's national security minister, the ministry said. A delegation led by the president of Nicaragua's National Assembly, Rene Nunez, will also attend the National Day events, the ministry said. (By Elaine Hou)
