MILAN (AP) -- The president of the International Cycling Union has urged Fernando Alonso to talk to the sport's governing body if the Formula One driver wants his cycling team to race in 2015.

The deadline has already passed for Alonso's prospective new team to apply for a WorldTour license to compete in cycling's top level next year.

Cookson, who was in Milan for Monday's Giro d'Italia presentation, tells The Associated Press "it's not too late for a team at the Pro Continental level for next year, but time is moving on and I think Mr. Alonso and his advisers need to come to talk to us in UCI and we can help and advise them on their plans for the future."

Alonso announced last year that he would look to create his own team to race in 2015.
