Thai inmate in Taiwan wins cartoon competition

Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) A Thai worker jailed in Taiwan has won a prize in a cartoon competition organized by the National Immigration Administration. The Thai, who goes by the alias of Alan, submitted a four-block comic strip for the competition aimed at cracking down on human trafficking and won an Excellence Award that carried an unspecific cash prize, according to the administration. The agency said Alan, who is currently being held in Taipei Prison in Taoyuan County, drew the comic strip based on what he saw on local TV in his cell. The simplicity of his work was praised by the jury, which decided to grant him the Excellence Award. The award-winning strip is only one of the cartoons he has drawn in his cell based on stories of criminal activity seen on TV to inspire others to avoid crimes, and the works have been compiled into a book. One of Alan's friends encouraged him to enter the competition. The administration said Alan comes from a poor family in Thailand. He dropped out of school to apply for a job in Taiwan and sent most of his wages back home to support his ailing parents. He was involved in a criminal case while working in Taiwan and was handed a 10-year jail term five years ago, according to a letter he wrote to the administration. The administration said Alan's award-winning work will be part of a pamphlet it will publish to promote the fight against human trafficking. (By Liu Chien-pang and Maubo Chang)
