National Day to be windy, cool: Central Weather Bureau

Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) Those who plan to watch the National Day fireworks on Friday might want to keep their fingers crossed because of the prospect of strong winds from Typhoon Vongfong, the Central Weather Bureau said Monday. Although the typhoon is not likely to have a direct impact on Taiwan, the gusts it causes islandwide could affect fireworks displays on Oct. 10, forecasters said. There could also be heavy waves along coastal areas as the typhoon nears, the bureau cautioned. As of 2 p.m. Monday, Vongfong was centered 2,280 kilometers east-southeast of the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 29 kph, forecasters said. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 119 kph, with gusts reaching 155 kph, according to the bureau. Northern and eastern Taiwan could also see showers on National Day, while cloudy to sunny skies are expected in other parts of the country, according to the bureau. Temperature-wise, daytime lows on Friday will likely hover around 24 degrees Celsius across the country while the highs in northern, central and southern Taiwan could reach 28, 32 and 30 degrees, respectively, the bureau said.
