PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) -- President Barack Obama is declaring a major disaster for recent storms, flooding and landslides in American Samoa.
The White House announced the declaration for the territory on Wednesday.
Obama is also ordering federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts.
Federal funding is available to eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations to repair or replace facilities damaged by the storms, flooding and landslides from July 29 to Aug. 3.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says additional disaster designations could be made later if requested by the territory, based on further damage assessments.
