MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has signed to play for the Melbourne Stars in Australian cricket's Big Bash Twenty20 League next season.
Pietersen, who was dumped by England after their Ashes defeat to Australia this year, is the league's most high-profile signing to date.
The 34-year-old Pietersen, whose talent has been overshadowed by his ability to generate controversy, says he is excited to play in the Australian domestic league and for a team based at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Pietersen says, "It was an easy choice for me when you look at the players we have."
Chairman of selectors Damien Fleming says he hopes Pietersen will help Melbourne win its first BBL title. He says Pietersen is "an awesome talent and proven world-class cricketer across all forms of the game."
