Asustek launches ZenFone series in Russia

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. launched its popular ZenFone smartphone series in Russia Friday, hoping to build a following for the low-cost devices in the emerging market. Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih personally demonstrated the series and introduced the interface at a launch ceremony in Moscow. The ZenFone models, priced as low as US$99, were unveiled in January this year as Asustek's answer to Chinese handset maker Xiaomi Corp.'s affordable Hongmi series. The ZenFone series is already being sold in Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and India, and is scheduled to go on sale in Turkey and Brazil later this year, according to Asustek. The launch event in Turkey is scheduled for Aug. 6, the company told CNA. Asustek forecast at an investor conference on May 7 that it would sell 5 million to 10 million smartphones in 2014, which would help boost its revenues for the year. It is likely to update the figures at an upcoming investor conference next month. (By James Lee)
