20 Indian students awarded Taiwan scholarships

New Delhi, July 15 (CNA) Taiwan's representative office in India presented scholarships Tuesday to 20 Indian students to support their planned studies in Taiwan. The scholarships are awarded in two categories each year -- the Taiwan Scholarship, which is for students pursuing master's or doctoral degrees, and the Huayu Scholarship, which is for studying Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, according to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in India. This year, eight of the students were awarded the Taiwan Scholarship, giving them each a monthly stipend of NT$20,000 (US$666) for 2-4 years, while the other 12 received the Huayu Scholarship, the TECC said. Each Huayu Scholarship recipient receives NT$25,000 per month for six months, the center said. Over the past 10 years, the TECC has given scholarships to more than 200 Indian students in various fields. Currently, there are over 50,000 foreign students in Taiwan, of which 638 are from India, said Tien Chung-kwang, Taiwan's representative to India. The scholarships are part of a Taiwan government policy to encourage foreign students to study there, Tien said. (By Ho Horn-ru and Elizabeth Hsu)
