Phoenix Suns beat Roma 100-93 in exhibition

Shawn Marion scored 19 points and Steve Nash had nine assists as the Phoenix Suns beat Virtus Lottomatica Roma 100-93 in an exhibition on Friday.
The game was part of the NBA Europe Live Tour, which also features three other NBA teams playing on the continent. The Suns will play two more games in Cologne, Germany next week against the Philadelphia 76ers and another European team.
Phoenix led from the start and struggled only when coach Mike D'Antoni pulled his starters midway through each quarter.
Raja Bell and Brazilian guard Leandro Barbarosa each had 18 points for Phoenix.
David Hawkins led Roma with 22 points.
"I'm proud of him. He was more physical than I thought," D'Antoni said of Hawkins, who the Suns have been scouting. "He can play in the NBA."
The 9,500-seat Palalottomatica arena was filled to capacity and the game had a festive atmosphere.
The Italian fans were clearly excited to see the Suns. They gave the NBA's reigning two-time MVP Steve Nash a big round of applause when he exited the game, but they also booed loudly following every close call.
D'Antoni, who spent 21 seasons in Italy as a player and coach, publicly thanked the fans in fluent Italian after the game.
NBA commissioner David Stern sat courtside next to Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu and Rome mayor Walter Veltroni, an acknowledged basketball fanatic.
The Suns trained in the northern Italian town of Treviso for four days before coming to Rome for their preseason opener. The Suns open the NBA season against the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 31. Roma begins the Italian league season on Wednesday.
