Agriculture losses from heavy rain top NT$40 million in May

Taipei, May 31 (CNA) Taiwan's agriculture sector suffered NT$41 million (US$1.33 million) in damages to crops this month after unusually heavy rain blanketed much of the island, according to government statistics. Citing the statistics compiled by local governments, the Council of Agriculture said central Taiwan was the worst affected area, with losses suffered by Yunlin County reaching NT$19.62 million. Water melon growers reported NT$7.07 million in losses, the largest amount of the types of agricultural items affected, the statistics showed. Other agricultural products also damaged by recent heavy rain included mushrooms, green soybeans, cantaloupes, tomatoes, muskmelons and peanuts, the council said. Losses due to damaged agricultural products totaled NT$39.91 million, while the remaining losses resulted from damaged agricultural facilities, including a loss worth NT$1.04 million in Taichung City, where many farms were inundated with water, the council said.
