Brazil's Ponte Preta signs coach Paiva

Struggling Brazil club Ponte Preta hired former player Wanderley Paiva as its coach until the end of the 2006 season.
Paiva replaced Marco Aurelio, who was fired on Thursday after failing to take Ponte Preta out of the relegation zone in the Brazilian league.
Ponte Preta is 17th in the 20-team standings with only 30 points from 27 matches. The bottom four clubs will be relegated at the end of the season.
"We have to win from now on," said Paiva, a former Ponte Preta midfielder. "We can only move forward now."
Ponte Preta lost to Parana 2-1 on Wednesday in Curitiba _ the team's third consecutive setback. It will host Juventude on Saturday in Campinas.
Ponte Preta has the competition's worst defense with 50 goals allowed.
