CEPD plans to invest in medical tourism

The Council for Economic Planning and Development yesterday announced that the government will make Taiwan the number one choice in medical tourism for Chinese people by investing NT$10.5 billion in the sector, focusing on laser eye surgery, cosmetic surgery, health checkups and Chinese medicine.
CEPD Chairman Hu Sheng-cheng said medical tourism presented substantial business opportunities for Taiwan.
"Taiwan will become well known for providing high quality and advanced technology in medical tourism in the near future," he stated.
His optimism was backed by the examples of Thailand and other Asian countries, which are attracting considerable numbers of visitors for medical procedures.
"Medical tours to Thailand, India and Singapore have become very popular in recent years," Hu said.
He indicated that 1.28 million people from around the world sought medical treatments in Thailand last year, earning the country US$8.6 billion in foreign exchange. Thailand's major attractions for patients are advanced high technology in sex change operations and cosmetic surgery, Hu said.
The Thai government has predicted that more than 1.4 million people will take medical tours to Thailand this year, pushing foreign exchange earnings above US$10 billion.
Hu said medical tourism developed rapidly in India and its advantage is in providing lower cost medical services. The average cost in treating heart disease or for procedures like cosmetic surgery, joint replacement and dental surgery is 70 percent lower in India than in western countries.
It is cheaper than that of Singapore and Thailand by 30 percent to 40 percent, Hu said.
He added that India has become a popular location for the British to undergo angioplasty and organ transplants. The India government predicted that the medical treatment and health care sector could earn US$1.70 billion in revenues annually over the next six years.
