IBM offers Spanish translation software to 50 US schools, nonprofits through grant program

IBM Corp. on Monday plans to unveil the latest version of a grant program that uses translation software to enable Spanish-speaking parents to communicate with their children's English-speaking teachers.
The TraduceloAhora! (Translate Now!) grant program uses an enhanced version of IBM's WebSphere software to translate e-mails from English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English, and also translates Web sites automatically from English to Spanish.
Doris Gonzalez, IBM's TraduceloAhora! program manager, said Spanish-speaking parents can use the software to e-mail their child's teacher in their own language.
IBM is giving away access to the Spanish translation WebSphere software, which is available commercially in nine languages including Japanese and Italian, and valued at $20,000 (euro15,793), to more than 50 schools and nonprofit organizations in 14 states and Washington, D.C., Gonzalez said.
