DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes says sales fell slightly in September

DaimlerChrysler AG said Friday that its Mercedes Car Group sold 1.5 percent fewer vehicles in September than in the same month a year earlier, but sales rose over the first nine months of this year.
The unit sold a total of 116,100 cars worldwide last month, down from 117,800 a year earlier. While sales of Mercedes-Benz brand cars were unchanged at 106,600, the company said the number of Smart vehicles sold declined by 16.4 percent to 9,500.
From January to September, overall sales rose by 5.8 percent to a record 934,200, the company said.
Mercedes-Benz sold 846,300 vehicles during the period, a rise of 9.4 percent, while Smart sales dropped by nearly 20 percent to 87,900.
Over recent months, Mercedes has weathered a restructuring of the Smart unit and tackled quality problems.
Still, the company said Mercedes-Benz gained market share in all regions over the first nine months.
Deliveries in the United States rose by 13 percent to a record 176,600, while rising 19 percent in the Asia-Pacific region and 6 percent in western Europe.
