SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Officials say a fire in Chile's capital burned through more than a dozen homes and killed one person.
The fire began late Sunday next to ramshackle housing at Santiago's Juan Pablo II slum.
Firefighters from more than a dozen companies battled the blaze.
Officials identified the victim as 43-year-old Nancy Ortiz Zapata. She lived with her 9-year old daughter in one of the homes destroyed by the blaze.
Local radio Bio Bio reports that Ortiz died when a gas tank exploded as she tried to rescue the girl, who escaped unharmed.
The fire is under investigation and its cause has not been confirmed.
