6.2 Richter Scale Magnitude Earthquake Shook Philippines

An earthquake shook the Philippines’ largest island on Thursday (05/15/2014) with the strength above 6.2 on the Richter scale.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Sulu Sea within 38 kilometers Southwest Negros Island at 6.16 pm local time. There was not any tsunami warning after the earthquake.

The depth of the earthquake was 53 km. The Philippine volcanologist institute estimates that there is no serious damage caused by the earthquake that occurred.

Edmundo Vilches, one of the officials, said that the Philippine civil defense officials on the island of Negros did not report any damage caused by the earthquake.
