ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Exit polls immediately following the end of voting in Greece's local elections show leftist candidates ahead in Greece's capital and biggest region.

In Athens, Gavriil Sakellaridis, a 33-year-old candidate supported by the left opposition SYRIZA party, is practically running neck and neck with left-center incumbent Giorgos Kaminis. Sakellaridis is credited with 20-24 percent of the vote and Kaminis with 19-23 percent.

Conservative candidate Aris Spiliotopoulos is projected getting 15-19 percent and extreme right candidate Ilias Kassidiaris, a Golden Dawn lawmaker facing criminal charges, 14-17 percent.

In the Attica region, Greece's most populous, SYRIZA candidate Rena Dourou is leading socialist incumbent Yannis Sgouros by about 7 percent.
