Safin, Gasquet upset in Metz

Former No. 1 Marat Safin couldn't stop Jurgen Melzer on Thursday, losing their second-round match 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the Open de Moselle.
Safin saved four match points against Melzer, three of them when the Austrian was serving at 5-4, 40-0 in the final set. The Russian saved another in the tiebreaker but Melzer held on.
Also, fifth-seeded Richard Gasquet lost to French countryman Arnaud Clement 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Clement took almost three hours to separate himself from Gasquet, whom he also defeated en route to his first title of the year at Marseille in February. He also won at Washington in August.
Clement will meet another compatriot, Sebastien Grosjean, in Friday's quarterfinals, after Grosjean dispatched countryman Julien Benneteau 7-5, 6-1.
Four Frenchmen reached the quarterfinals but they're paired off against each other: The other pits Marc Gicquel against Florent Serra.
Third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia beat Daniele Bracciali of Italy 6-0, 6-3, and Mardy Fish of the United States and German qualifier Tobias Clemens also won second-round matches.
Fish downed Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 6-3, 6-3, and Clemens edged Cyril Saulnier of France 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5).
