Heavy rains unleash flooding across Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Authorities in Puerto Rico are reporting widespread flooding as heavy rains pound the U.S. territory.

The National Weather Service says up to three inches (eight centimeters) of rain are falling per hour as thunderstorms move eastward across the island.

Government officials say the rains caused a landslide in the northern town of Vega Alta and cut off access to some 20 families in the area.

Meteorologists said Thursday that the rain is expected to last through early Sunday.
