Greek court awards injured fan compensation over 'negligent' police checks

An Athens court ruled Thursday that Greece must compensate a soccer fan who was left partially blind following violence at a match three years ago, court officials said.
The court awarded euro90,000 (US$115,000) to Achilleas Dragoumis, after deciding that police on duty at the Athens match were negligent in their security checks on fans entering the stadium.
Dragoumis, 40, was hit in the face by a flare thrown from the opposite stands during the game between crosstown rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.
The missile smashed his glasses, leading to the full loss of his sight in one eye.
Dragoumis appealed the ruling, seeking compensation of euro1 million (US$1.27 million).
