A New `American Girl' Show Arrives

For the thousands of parents who will join their daughters, and occasionally their sons, for the American Girl production, "Circle of Friends," two guides are recommended: a program and an American Girl Doll catalog.
"Circle of Friends" opened recently at the American Girl Place on Fifth Avenue for an expected 3-year run. The program will help you follow the story, and even sing along to this 75-minute revue of friendship through the ages, from colonial times to World War II.
Presented in a low-ceilinged, 133-seat theater, on a small, strobe-lit stage, "Circle of Friends" features eight determined young actresses (with at least 11 performances a week, the cast varies from show to show) as a group of grade schoolers assembling a quilt for a friend's surprise party.
Honesty, loyalty and caring are emphasized as the girls dramatize each patch of the quilt by acting out an American Girl Doll story, like Felicity's defending the Boston Tea Party to her doubting peers or the Great Depression tale in which Kit feels ashamed of inviting people to her modest home. "Not all rich people are mean," a friend assures her.
But "Circle of Friends" could also be taken as an American Girl catalog come to life, less a story with product placement than a display of merchandise set to music. So while your kids enjoy the show and memorize its title song ("We all need each other, this circle of friends"), why not look through the catalog and match the listing with the appropriate prop or costume?
A friendship quilt, for instance, can be purchased for $22. Flame-resistant, lavender pajamas, complete with "intricate embroidered ribbon trim," are available for $39, and satin slippers go for $19. The historical episodes in "Circle of Friends" are based on American Girl books, $12.95 for hardcover, $6.95 in paperback. The soundtrack CD is $14.95.
Suppose you buy your daughter a CD and a pair of slippers. Throw in $34 per ticket and a prix fixe dinner for two, $48.00, at the American Girl Cafe, and a night on the town can be had for $149.95, plus tax and tip.
And the catalog is free.
