Enel and Gazprom agree to secure further gas supply to Italy

The chief executives of Italy's largest power company, Enel SpA, and Russia's natural gas giant, Gazprom OAO, met in Moscow Thursday to discuss ways of getting more gas to Italy, Enel said.
"(Fulvio) Conti and (Alexey) Miller discussed ways to secure further gas supply to the Italian market," the Italian company said in a statement. The two executives held similar discussion in Milan in March.
Enel is Italy's largest power company Europe's third-largest listed utility by market capitalization, valued at euro44 billion (US$56 billion) at current prices. Besides generating and supplying electricity, Enel also distributes and supplies gas.
Enel has been looking to expand abroad and was considering a bid for France's Suez SA earlier this year but was blocked when Suez and Gaz De France decided to merge in response. The move raised cries of protectionism from Italian lawmakers. The EU is to rule on the Suez-GDF merger later this month.
