European race walk champion Fernandez will retire if he wins Olympic gold

Olympic race walking silver medallist Francisco Fernandez of Spain will retire if he wins the Olympic title at the 2008 Beijing Games.
"If becoming Olympic champion is something that I have accomplished, then it will be time to retire," Fernandez said on Wednesday.
The European and World Cup 10-kilometer race walking champ has focused all of his training on winning the 20km Olympic title after finishing behind Ivano Brugnetti of Italy at the 2004 Athens Games.
"This season will be very important for me," he said. "I still think I can compete with the elite and have a lot of success up until 2010."
Though Fernandez plans to compete at the world championships in Osaka, Japan next August, he admits he is "ready to leave" racing to undertake other projects.
Also on Wednesday, the Department of Education, Science, and Sport named Fernandez director of Spain's first race walking specialty school to open in the city of Guadix.
