Safin ousts compatriot Youzhny at Metz

Russia's Marat Safin took less than an hour to oust fourth-seeded countryman Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Open de Moselle on Wednesday.
The two-time Grand Slam champion, who told French sports daily L'Equipe in an interview published on Wednesday that he will retire in 2010, gave Youzhny no break points. Last month, the pair led Russia past the United States 3-2 and into the Davis Cup final.
Safin will meet Jurgen Melzer of Austria for his second quarterfinals berth in two weeks.
In an all-Spanish affair, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo upset seventh-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3. Ramirez-Hidalgo, who also beat Verdasco last week in Palermo, will next play American Mardy Fish.
Four Frenchman also advanced.
Arnaud Clement beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium 7-6 (3), 6-2, and Sebastien Grosjean topped Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 6-4.
In second-round action, Florent Serra outlasted countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), and lined up a quarterfinal with another Frenchman, wild card Marc Gicquel, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-2, 6-3.
