French presidential hopeful Sarkozy calls for increasing higher education funding

French Interior Minister and presidential hopeful Nicolas Sarkozy called Wednesday for a 50-percent increase in funding for higher education over the next five years.
Sarkozy, widely expected to be the governing conservative party's candidate in next spring's election, said increasing the higher education budget would cost euro5 billion (US$6.3 billion) between now and 2012.
"We must make the university a budgetary priority," Sarkozy said a party conference. By comparison, average spending for French university students is nearly three times less than that for their U.S. or Swiss counterparts, he said.
Meanwhile, the woman widely expected to be his main rival in next year's race _ Socialist Party aspirant Segolene Royal _ was set to appear in a prime-time TV interview Wednesday.
Former Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn and former Prime Minister Laurent Fabius are also seeking the Socialist nomination.
