Korea is model for investing in PRC, ITRI official says

Through global networking, South Korea has become Taiwan's strongest rival concerning investment in China and that is something Taiwan should learn from, the Industrial Technology Research Institute said yesterday.
From 2002 to 2005, South Korea's foreign direct investment or FDI ranking had jumped to the fourth. The major investment industries were electrical engineering, automobile industry, telecommunications, mobile phone and Household Electrical Appliances Manufacturing Industry. It has boosted its domestic economy by investing in China and has taken full advantage of China's plentiful resources.
Sonia Y.H. Leu, Research Manager from Industrial Economicis and Knowledge Center of Industrial Technology Research Institute pointed out some differences in investment strategies between South Korea and Taiwan.
She said that South Korea's government offered favorable benefits to investors in China and also indulged in group investments, so they could have more financial leverage, an example being the Samsung Group.
However, Taiwanese investors in China sill faced a series of tough governmental regulations. This is seen as reducing its competitiveness in China.
"Beijing and Tianjin will become the future major investment zones soon, similar to Shanghai" Leu said.
Leu went on to say that South Korea has broadened its market to northern China, so Taiwanese investors should prepare to face new challenges wherever they try to enter the market.
