Lien back to China to attend agricultural forum

Honorary chairman of the opposition Kuomintang Lien Chan (連戰) left for China yesterday with members of his family on a private tour that will precede a cross-strait agricultural forum at which Lien is expected to meet China President Hu Jin-tao.
The meeting will be the third between Lien and Hu in just over a year.
Lien made his first official visit to China in May last year, amid mixed reactions in China and Taiwan. His second visit was in April this year when he attended an economic forum held by the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party.
Lien is scheduled to attend the first cross-strait forum on agricultural cooperation on October 17 and 18, and is expected to meet with Hu at the forum which is being hosted by the KMT and the CCP.
The agricultural forum was originally scheduled to be held in Taiwan, but China officials refused to discuss the plans with Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which lead to the MAC turning down the applications for Chinese officials, including Taiwan Affairs Director Chen Yun-lin (陳雲林), to visit.
During the forum, Xiamen will host an exhibition featuring cross-strait agricultural cooperation achievements. Taiwan representatives are also scheduled to go to Shangdung, Guangxi, and Guangtung on an agricultural inspection tour.
China declared a series of the cross-strait agricultural cooperation policies this April, including the lifting customs duty on 11 Taiwan-grown vegetables, the expansion of it market to Taiwanese fruits, and the opening of two Taiwanese agricultural farms.
Lien's office said it expects that cross-strait agricultural cooperation will be further expanded after the agricultural forum.
