Bakery show draws enthusiastic gourmet food lovers

Taipei, March 15 (CNA) Tens of thousands of gourmet food lovers on Saturday flocked to the Taipei International Bakery Show to sample sweets, check out the latest development in the food industry, and show support to Taiwanese bakers who vied for a world pastry championship. Event goers were busy visiting over 100 booths at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, where a great variety of bakery-related items were showcased, including raw material, baking equipment, and finished food products. There were also long lines of people who waited to attend seminars so they could interact with lecturers over recipes. "I fly to this show every year to understand the trends," said Michael Teh, a Malaysian who keeps a pastry shop at home. The show is equally important to participating vendors who said a chance to network and get to know their customers is crucial to their research and development efforts. "We can also take this opportunity to share with the consumers better ways to select and prepare their food," said Su Mei-ying, who represented the China Grain Products Research & Development Institute, a participating organization. On the sidelines of the show, 12 chefs from eight countries, including Taiwan, Japan, Brazil and Germany, are competing for the 2014 Union of International Bakers and Confectioners (UIBC) Junior World Pastry Championship. The chefs are required to present different works, including a 200-centimer-high installation made from chocolate. The chefs, especially the two from Taiwan, caught much attention and cheers from the crowd. The winners of the competition will be announced later Saturday, while those interested in baking could still go to the event on Sunday, the last day of the four-day show. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
