MOOLOOLABA, Australia (AP) -- Gwen Jorgensen and Katie Hursey gave the United States a one-two finish Saturday in the women's sprint Mooloolaba Triathlon to open the ITU World Cup season.
The Australia-based Jorgensen finished the 750-meter (820-yard) swim, 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) cycle, and 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run in a time of 59 minutes, 55 seconds.
Hursey was 15 seconds behind, followed by Ai Ueda of Japan another four seconds back in third.
Ellen Pennock of Canada was fourth, New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt fifth and Emma Moffatt of Australia sixth among the 34 starters in the resort city north of Brisbane.
Defending champion Anne Haug of Germany, the No.3-ranked woman, withdrew with an undisclosed infection, leaving four of the world's top 10 in the field.
The elite sprint men's race was scheduled for later Saturday.
