LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (AP) -- Alexis Pinturault of France surprisingly won a World Cup super-G on Thursday, and Bode Miller of the United States was third.

In the race for the overall title, Marcel Hirscher of Austria closed the gap on super-G specialist Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway. Hirscher placed 12th in a rare super-G start as Svindal finished out of the points in 16th, trailing 2.16 seconds behind Pinturault.

Hirscher, the two-time defending overall champion, earned 22 points and now trails Svindal by only 19 with his best events to come.

Pinturault mostly skips super-G but won in 1 minute, 13.71 seconds as the last racer to beat teammate Thomas Mermillod Blondin by 0.56. Miller was a further one-hundredth back in third.

Ted Ligety of the United States was fifth.
