BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- The pope has a new passport.
And while the world knows him now as Pope Francis, he's still Jorge Mario Bergoglio, an Argentine citizen like any other, in the eyes of the government in Buenos Aires.
Since the pope's Argentine passport and national identity card were due to expire, Argentina's ambassador came to his hotel in the Vatican gardens on Friday, bringing a notebook computer to take his fingerprints and picture. Images of the new documents were released by Argentina's interior ministry on Monday.
Ambassador Juan Pablo Cafiero told the Associated Press that the pope wanted to travel as an Argentine, even though popes automatically pick up Vatican citizenship. He says the pope insisted on paying for the documents himself.
