Titles are sensitive issues to be negotiated: Chinese official

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Politically sensitive issues across the Taiwan Strait including the titles of Taiwan officials "should be resolved through political dialogue and negotiations," a spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office said Monday. The meetings last week of "those responsible for the departments handling cross-strait issues on the two sides" were held based on a "common political basis" and in the spirit of "mutual respect, seeking common ground while putting aside differences and promoting benign interactions," said Fan Liqing. She said the meetings between Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Minister Wang Yu-chi and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Zhijun were a practical arrangement for the purpose of deepening the peaceful development of the cross-strait relationship. The arrangement was in line with the reality of the current state of the relationship, Fan added. The point of having the meetings was to be able to handle pressing issues in cross-strait exchanges in a timely and appropriate manner, she said. She made the comments in response to questions on the fact that no one except Zhang addressed Wang by his official title when they met in Nanjing and Shanghai last week during Wang's first official visit to China. When mentioning Taiwan's Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council, the Taiwan Affairs Office, which comes under China's Cabinet, avoided the terms Executive Yuan and the Republic of China.
