Canadian organic food fair kicks off in Taiwan

Taipei, Feb. 13 (CNA) Canadian organic products such as maple syrup, soy milk, oats and jellies are being promoted at an exhibition in Taiwan in partnership with Leezen Co., a local supermarket chain specializing in organic food products. The 15-day food fair, which began Thursday in 98 Leezen stores, marked the second local promotional event co-organized by Leezen and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei to develop Taiwanese consumer interest in Canada's organic and natural food products. The Canadian Trade Office represents Canada's interests in Taiwan in the absence of diplomatic ties. It held the first Canadian Food Fair with Leezen in October 2012. A trade mission led by Robert Ghiz, premier of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI), was invited to attend the fair's opening ceremony in Taipei, in a move to strengthen exchanges with Taiwan's agricultural sector. "Leezen and Canada have a deep and long-lasting relationship that began a number of years ago," Kathleen Mackay, executive director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, said at the ceremony. "The visit of PEI Premier Ghiz and the PEI delegation here is a testimony to the close partnership between Leezen and PEI. We really appreciate Leezen's assistance and support for Canadian and PEI products," she said. According to Mackay, Canada's total exports to Taiwan were worth more than C$200 million (US$182 million) in 2012, ranking Taiwan the fourth-largest export market in Asia for Canada and the 11th-largest worldwide. Ghiz for his part said that PEI was the fastest-growing Canadian exporter to Taiwan from 2007 to 2012, with average annual growth of 13 percent. The province's main exports to Taiwan include frozen potato products, soybeans and lobsters, he said. "Prince Edward Island has a growing trade relationship with Taiwan and would like to further explore opportunities to expand that relationship," Ghiz said. (By Jeffrey Wu)
