Muslim leaders need to speak out more forcefully against violence

The following editorial appeared in the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday:
It's fine for the pious to feel proud and even protective of their faith. But the reaction of some radical Muslims to perceived blasphemies has gotten way out of hand.
Already this year, they have reacted violently to a passage in a lecture from the pope and political cartoons they deemed offensive.
This week a German opera company canceled its production of a Mozart opera because of a scene depicting the severed head of the Prophet Muhammad. Citing a threat, police warned of danger to the performers and audience. Never mind that the scene also depicted the heads of Jesus and Buddha.
It is deeply disturbing that the risk of religiously driven attacks would chill free speech and artistic expression. Responsible Muslim leaders need to speak out against violence in the name of their faith.
