AIT video sends Lunar New Year greetings (video)

Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has extended wishes for a happy Lunar New Year in the Year of the Horse through a video posted to YouTube and shared on Facebook. The video, which features AIT Taipei Director Christopher Marut, is the second one made by the U.S. representative office to offer Lunar New Year blessings, AIT said. "My wife Loretta and I, and all of us at AIT, would like to wish you a pleasant and prosperous Year of the Horse," Marut says at the beginning of the video, before staff members and officials of each section of AIT's Taipei and Kaohsiung offices extend their best wishes for a prosperous New Year in Mandarin, Taiwanese and Hakka. They also hold up iconic items representing the Lunar New Year, such as red envelopes -- traditionally filled with cash and given as gifts -- and spring couplets that hang beside doors during the holiday. Officials from AIT's Economic Section also participate in a Lunar New Year tradition in the video by sitting around a table playing Mahjong, a popular holiday activity. (By Elaine Hou)
