Taiwan to host 2017 World Stage Design

Taipei, Jan. 9 (CNA) Taiwan will host the 2017 World Stage Design, an international theater design exhibition and competition, the Ministry of Culture announced Thursday. Taiwan beat China and the Philippines in the selection process for the host country, which involved three phases of screening, according to the ministry. Held every four years, the event includes the world congress for the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT), which has members in 50 countries and its headquarters in Taipei. The World Stage Design also includes a performance and design festival, an exhibition, workshops, seminars and theater shows. Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai touted Taiwan's strength in design, saying several of the country's designers were nominated for awards at last year's World Stage Design. "That is where Taiwan's vitality lies," Lung said. She said she hopes that hosting the event will help Taiwan gain more visibility in the international community. The first World Stage Design took place in Toronto in 2005. It was hosted by the South Korean capital Seoul in 2009 and by Cardiff in the United Kingdom in 2013. The 2017 event, to be held July 1-9 at Taipei National University of the Arts, is expected to attract theater experts and representatives from more than 50 countries. (By Christie Chen)
