Kerry seeking cease-fire, aid for Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State John Kerry is headed to Paris and Kuwait on Saturday to rally international support for ending the three-year civil war in Syria and increase aid for its victims.

The trip comes before a scheduled Jan. 22 meeting near Geneva where world officials hope to negotiate a cease-fire between Syrian President Bashar Assad and rebel groups fighting to overthrow him.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Wednesday said Kerry's first stop is in Paris to join foreign ministers from 11 nations working on a Syria proposal. Kerry also will update Arab League officials on attempts to negotiate a peace agreement between Israel and Palestinian authorities.

In Kuwait, Kerry will urge world officials and international organizations to help raise humanitarian aid for the victims of the Syrian war.
